Mike Wood
(Air Boss)
Mike has over 40 years of flying experience. He
served in the Royal Air Force for 32 years as a
fast jet pilot and retired in the rank of Wing
Commander in 1997. He was a member of the Royal
Australian Air Force Display Team the
“Roulettes” between 1981 and 1983. Mike has held
numerous senior project management appointments
responsible for construction programmes,
budgetary control and the improvement of
operational performance.
Since leaving the RAF
he has been employed by the Civil Aviation
Authority (UK CAA) where he was the CAA
Principal Inspector of Air Displays between 1998
and 2000.
He is still employed as a CAA-authorised Display Authorisation Evaluator
and is a member of the Flying Control Committee
at IWD Duxford. He has acted as Flying Display
Director for numerous air shows and other air
displays and was the Flying Director in Malta
for Aero GP.
Mike also works part time as a CAA
Flight Examiner and Instructor for the RAF
Flying Club in the UK and still flies over 150
hours a year. In 1995 he was responsible for
identifying and setting up the location for the
European Microlight Championship on behalf of
the British Microlight Association. In 1997 the
Royal Aero Club appointed him as the Captain of
the UK World Air Games Team and he participated
at the World Air Games in Turkey. He was further
responsible for fundraising and obtaining
sponsorship.
